IIHS Library

The IIHS Library is central to the institution’s mission to build a research, knowledge, and teaching hub focused on India’s urbanisation. It aims to be the largest reference library on urbanisation in South Asia, providing a range of resources and services to support researchers and practitioners studying urban processes and transitions in developing countries.

Presently housed in the Bangalore City Campus, the IIHS Library is a repository of over 3000 books, over 400 CDs and DVDs, 40 print journals and magazines in addition to on and off-campus access to over 4000 e-journals across disciplines. Additional research and learning materials include cartographic materials, case studies, audio visual materials, and data. The Library offers extensive access to the latest academic work through wide ranging and inter-disciplinary journal subscriptions. It is a participating institute with JSTOR, and subscribes to EBSCO’s EconLit with Full Text, Social Sciences Full Text, Art and Architecture Complete and Manupatra databases for social science literature and legal information. In addition, it subscribes to a number of individual and independent journals, both domestic and international, pertaining to cities.

The IIHS Library also houses a Data Library that accesses and archives the most up-to-date socio-economic data available in India related to urbanisation. In addition to archiving and publishing data from public data sources such as the Census and NSS, the Data Library also subscribes to a number of databases such as the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy, IndiaStat, and the EPW Research Foundation.

Through a series of thematic monthly exhibitions of books, maps, and movies, and public events such as book launches and talks, the Library furthers its core knowledge functions at IIHS and in the wider community. The Library provides a range of services including reference services, research and teaching support, and circulation services. Equipped with computers for users’ access and teaching aids such as Prezi, EndNote, and Turnitin, the IIHS Library supports the research and teaching needs of the faculty and learners through a range of services.

B. Preedip Balaji
Associate Librarian

Preedip graduated with a master’s degree in library and information science in 2007. He has over six years of work experience in library and information science practice and research. He has worked as Senior Research Fellow leading the PhD programme at Documentation Research & Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore & has also worked with ICICI Knowledge Park and Indian School of Business, Hyderabad for 3 years.

With a few published papers to his credit, his research areas are knowledge organization, digital libraries and semantic web. His interests are reading, poetry, travel, and photography.

Amrutraj R. Benahal
Assistant Librarian

Amrutraj has around 4 years of work experience. He was an Associate at Accenture Services Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore where he was responsible for library management. As Project Fellow at the Department of Library and Information Studies, University of Mysore, he worked on survey research. He has interned at the Learning Resource Centre, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, where he worked on various online resources and attended online queries using more than 40 Business and Management databases.

At IIHS, he is responsible for procurement, classification, cataloguing, RFID tagging and other library operations. His expertise lies in classification and cataloguing, and preparation of information products.

Exhibitions & Events

The IIHS Library runs a series of thematic monthly exhibitions that focus on a particular city or theme. The exhibitions include books, maps, movies, and other content. Themes range from art and heritage in Indian cities, sustainable design, water and resource management, graphic novels, political history, to life sciences and the urban practitioner. In addition, the IIHS Library organizes PublicTexts, a series of conversations with authors about their work, using particular texts as starting points for dynamic, contemporary and free-ranging conversations about the present. These conversations are part of Publics, a series of interactions, seminars, events, exhibitions and talks held at the IIHS, Bangalore. storJSTOR provides access to approximately 2000 full text e-journals of multidisciplinary and discipline-specific collections under the Developing Countries Initiative. The collections are Art & Sciences I to XII, Business III, Life Sciences and Ireland Collection. Besides that JSTOR also provide access to JSTOR Global Plants, and Aluka the African Digital Library of scholarly resources.

EBSCOEconLit with Full Text contains all of the indexing available in EconLit, plus full text for nearly 600 journals and is a reliable source of citations and abstracts to economic research dating back to 1886..  EconLit, the American Economic Association’s electronic database, is the world’s foremost source of references to economic literature. It provides links to full-text articles in all fields of economics, including capital markets, country studies, econometrics, economic forecasting, environmental economics, government regulations, labor economics, monetary theory, and urban economics.

Social Sciences Full Text provides access to a wide assortment of the most important English-language social science journals. It includes full text of articles from some 215 journals dating as far back as 1995 and indexing and abstracts of over 625 periodicals dating as far back as 1983, nearly 400 of which are peer-reviewed covering the latest concepts, theories and methods from both applied and theoretical aspects of the social sciences.


Industry Outlook – Industry Outlook is a web delivered service that provides real time analysis of current trends, insights of the long term trends and quantitative forecasts for over 190 industries. It contains historical data on capacity, production, foreign trade, detailed aggregated financial performance of industries along with company-wise disaggregations.

CapEx –  The CapEx database provides insights on new capacities coming up in India in the near, medium and long term. These are aggregated across industries, product groups, geographies, project status, capacity creation and ownership. Access to individual project profiles is also provided.

IndiaStatIndiaStat is a socio-economic and statistical database with a cluster of 57 sites including India-specific, sector specific, region specific and state specific sites providing authentic and comprehensive compilation of secondary level socio-economic statistical data about India and its states, region and sector on more than 35 variables.

EPW ResearchEPW Research Foundation India Time Series provides expertise in important areas of economic research and analysis. This database provide access to industrial statistics, wholesale and consumer price indices, central and state government finances, the financial system and the money market, balance of payments, foreign trade, external debt and exchange rate statistics and some social sector development indicators covering over 45 macro-economic and sectoral data sets. The module IIHS subscribed is State Domestic Product of India, covering data from 1960-61 series onwards.
